Checkers Cafe runs a "We can Cook" children's cookery camp during school holidays. The camp runs from Tuesday through Friday, and is very popular with local children.
The camp is very 'hands-on' and children are taught how to follow recipies, measure ingredients and bake delicious treats like cup cakes, apple cakes, soda breads yeast breads or whatever other theme is popular for the week. Children also learn to cook simple meals such as chicken escallops, meat balls or spaghetti Bolognese.
The children are the centre of attention; they get to wear chef hats and aprons, and they receive a copy of the recipes they have worked on, along with a photograph of themselves and a certificate of completion.
Children also sample their dishes and take home what they have cooked on the day, so it is a fun learning experience for them.
